Most industry analysts anywhere claim that a very large percentage of online interviews are now completed on phones and tablets, so it's becoming more important than ever before to ensure your surveys are adapted to display and collect correctly on mobile devices. As 91% of adults have a smartphone easily accessible, mobile research offers access to respondents as never before, wherever they go and whenever they are responsive to their phone. As most people are so "in tune" with their phone, mobile phones also offer new potential for natural, "in-the-moment" research, of attitudes, buying patterns and reactions. Mobiles also facilitate the easy and immediate capture of visual content like images and video, and more access to moods, emotions and sensory impressions. Mobiles are particularly great in accessing young populations and out-of-home responses in a range of different environments.
However, you do need to fine-tune your research to mobiles. 20 minute surveys with banks of repetitive grid questions are no longer appropriate. In a study of what made people exit interviews early, a recent Ipsos-MORI paper cited 52% of terminations were triggered by grid layouts, with a further 22% being triggered by requests for long, open-text responses. Empathy with your participants can only maximise engagement. Ask about what you'd like to understand and not everything that you'd like to know!
